The Ulric Walmsley Catalogue

Page 1 – Still life compositions

WE START with a selection of Ulric's still life compositions. This subject-matter is not what we normally associate with Ulric but it features in two of his earliest known paintings, both dated 1894, and was revisited throughout his career. Moreover, still life compositions are amongst his largest, most elaborate and most vibrant works.

Still life with roses and bird's nest

Still life with roses and bird's nest
(Oil on canvas, 1894, 27 x 35 cm)
Cat no 101

Notes: Ulric's earliest known oil painting, one of the most elaborate
and certainly one of the most beautiful. The signature block is almost
unique, appearing in only one other work. The most unusual element –
the stylised "J" – is known from an earlier architectural drawing.

Pot of roses

Pot of roses
(Watercolour, 38 x 46 cm)
Cat no 154

Notes: Although similar in style and palette to the 1894 oil painting above,
this watercolour – on the basis of its signature – is from at least
two decades later.

Bowl of nasturtiums

Bowl of nasturtiums
(Oil, unsigned, 28 x 23 cm)
Cat no 077

Notes: One of Ulric's most colourful works, possibly from quite late. It was a
present from Ulric's daughter to a close family friend in memory of her father.

Rose

Rose
(Oil on canvas, 20 x 28 cm)
Cat no 170

Notes: The untidy and unstylised signature suggests this is a very early work
from before 1900. Courtesy of the Robin Hood's Bay Museum Trust.

Still life on Longpark dish

Still life on Longpark dish
(Oil and watercolour on terracotta, 1894, diam. 29 cm)
Cat no 138

Notes: Abrasive cleaning has removed all but a few traces of the
green/brown background wash and it is not clear whether the signature
ever included an initial "J". As a small manufacturer Longpark did not
employ guest artists: this work was almost certainly a one-off.

Bowl of roses

Bowl of roses
(Watercolour, 26 x 38 cm)
Cat no 042

Note: Another much later reworking of the roses theme.

Spray of chrysanthemums

Spray of chrysanthemums
(Watercolour, 1912, 53 x 28 cm)
Cat no 155

Primroses

Primroses
(Watercolour, 18 x 30 cm)
Cat no 040

Notes: The odd signature makes dating difficult but this is probably a
fairly late work. It was a present from Ulric to a close family friend.
