The Ulric Walmsley Catalogue

Page 5 – The Coast around Robin Hood's Bay

THE COAST and, in particular, views out towards Ravenscar feature prominently in Ulric's oil paintings. The expense of the materials was generally matched by the care taken with his artistic technique and resulted in some very fine, evocative paintings in a variety of styles.

Ravenscar

Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay
(Oil on canvas, 1901, 19 x 24 cm)
Cat no 114

Notes: This delicately painted little work is the earliest dated view of the coast leading around to Ravenscar. It is also one of only two works signed with just the initials "J U W".

Ravenscar

Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay
(Postcard, 1910, 9 x 14 cm)
Cat no 1910/6

Notes: From the third (1910) series of postcards issued by Ruddock of Lincoln.
The diminutive fishing boats are a constant element in Ulric's seascapes.

Ravenscar

Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay
(Oil on canvas, 1911, 60 x 75 cm)
Cat no 125

Notes: A very large and finely worked seascape. The artistry of the waves is
particularly noticeable.

Sailing boats

Sailing boats
(Watercolour, 1914, 17 x 35 cm)
Cat no 102

Children on shore

Children and fishing cobles on shore of Robin Hood's Bay
(Postcard, 1910, 9 x 14 cm)
Cat no 1910/3

Notes: A charming scene, unusual for the prominence given to human.
figures. We know that Ulric took a photograph of the scene and then
adjusted the lay-out for his painting.

Ness

Ness, Robin Hood's Bay
(Postcard, 1910, 9 x 14 cm)
Cat no 1910/5

Note: This appears to have been the best seller of all Ulric's postcards
with sales counted in the thousands.

Coastal scene

Coastal scene (probably Whitby cliffs)
(Oil on hardboard, 60 x 50 cm)
Cat no 136

Note: Amongst the largest of Ulric's paintings, this work is difficult to date
because of its unusual signature. From its style and medium, it is perhaps
quite late.
The Scaurs and Ness

The Scaurs and Ness, Robin Hood's Bay
(Oil, 1901, 28 x 43 cm)
Cat no 030

Notes: A larger companion piece of the painting opposite, showing the top
end of the bay. Stylistically, they are very similar indeed. Both are
dated 1901 but this work has the new trademark signature

Ravenscar

Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay
(Watercolour, 19 x 35 cm)
Cat no 096

Note: A much later work than the similar oil painting and postcard shown
on the left.

Ravenscar

Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay
(Oil on canvas, 29 x 54 cm)
Cat no 135

Note: Another large canvas depicting Ravenscar, from a rather later
period, noteworthy for its vivid colours and surreal quality.

The Scaurs

The Scaurs, Robin Hood's Bay
(Watercolour, 17 x 25 cm)
Cat no 011

The Scaurs

The Scaurs, Robin Hood's Bay
(Watercolour, 20 x 25 cm)
Cat no 144

The Scaurs

Ravenscar, Robin Hood's Bay
(Oil, 22 x 27 cm)
Cat no 085

Notes: The style and palette are both very diifferent from the watercolours
above. This and the signature suggest a relatively late date.

Yorkshire coast

On the Yorkshire coast
(Watercolour, 46 x 35 cm)
Cat no 169

Notes: Probably another late work. The precise location is unknown.
