The Ulric Walmsley Catalogue

Page 9 – Whitby and other towns

PAINTINGS OF WHITBY and other nearby Yorkshire towns are less numerous than might have been expected, perhaps because they were unlikely to appeal to the holidaymakers in Robin Hood's Bay. Some of them were probably undertaken on commission from residents of Whitby and the other towns portrayed. Nonetheless, they represent a fine set of watercolours. They also include one of Ulric's earliest surviving works, an 1894 canal scene, possibly in the Shipley area.

East Pier Whitby

East Pier, Whitby
(Watercolour, 1907)
Cat no 034

Notes: One of two fine harbour scenes evidently created as a pair.
Courtesy of Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society.

Whitby

Fishing boats by Whitby quay
(Watercolour, 1907, 23 x 33 cm)
Cat no 123

Note: Another tasteful (and very commercial) watercolour of Whitby
from 1907.

Market Place, Whitby

Market Place, Whitby
(Watercolour)
Cat no 127

Smoke houses

Smoke houses, Henrietta Streeet, Whitby
(Watercolour, 1940, 17 x 25 cm)
Cat no 087

Notes: This is the latest dated work, painted when Ulric was 80! Despite his
age, he clearly retained a deft touch and a fine sense of colouring. It is
also the only painting signed with a monogram, based on one he used
on architectural drawings in about the 1870s.

Thorpe

Thorpe, Fylingdales
(Postcard, 1910, 9 x 14 cm)
Cat no 1910/4

Note: This and the adjacent postcard are the only views of Thorpe, despite
its proximity to Robin Hood's Bay.

Richmond Castle

Richmond Castle
(Watercolour, 1913, 30 x 43 cm)
Cat no 004

Note: Since this image was submitted, we understand the painting has
changed hands; we would be delighted to hear from the new owner.
Spital Beck Whitby

Spital Beck, Whitby
(Watercolour, 1907)
Cat no 035

Note: Courtesy of Whitby Literary and Philosophiocal Society.

Whitby

Fishing boats by Whitby quay
(Watercolour, 1913, 24 x 30 cm)
Cat no 161

Whitby

Whitby
(Watercolour, 18 x 26 cm)
Cat no 062

Notes: A late work commissioned by Captain Readman of Whitby (see
also page 12). Curiously, Ulric has reverted to the signature he used
in his 1907 paintings.

Scarborough

Scarborough at night
(Oil, 12 x 21 cm)
Cat no 086

Note: From its style and signature, this most atmospheric little picture is
a very late work.

Thorpe

Thorpe, Fylingdales
(Postcard, undated, 14 x 9 cm)
Cat no UND/3

Barges

Barges on a canal
(Watercolour, 1894)
Cat no 112

Notes: One of three dated works from 1894, when Ulric was probably still
living in Shipley. It has been in the possession of family friends in
Liverpool ever since. It probably depicts the Leeds to Liverpool
canal somewhere in the Shipley area.
