The Ulric Walmsley Catalogue

Page 8 – Homes and Farms near Robin Hood's Bay

INLAND from Robin Hood's Bay the isolated habitations and small settlements offered plenty of scope for landscape scenes with the added interest of colourful buildings. Many of these buildings are still here today, though they can be difficult to identify after changes in the intervening period and Ulric's exercise of artistic licence.

delightful seaview. Compare the painting oppposite.

Brocket's Farm

"Brocket's Farm, Raw, RHB"
(Oil on canvas, 39 x 49 cm)
Cat no 133

Notes: Title is written on the stretcher frame but the farm's precise location
is unknown. A very fine and quite late painting noteworthy for the lavish use
of oils and the bold brushwork. The same distinctive style is evident in the
paintings opposite and below.

Wheatfield

Wheatfield
(Oil, 27 x 35 cm)
Cat no 103
Cottage

Cottage by stream
(Watercolour, 18 x 28 cm)
Cat no 099

Notes: According to Leo in So Many Loves, painting reflections in water was
cause for Ulric to grumble about the extra work. This is a rare example.

Bay Ness Farm

Bay Ness Farm
(Watercolour, 30 x 40 cm)
Cat no 005

Soulsgrave Farm Sneatonsthorpe

Soulsgrave Farm, Sneatonsthorpe
(Watercolour, 19 x 28 cm)
Cat no 117

Houses

Houses in village
(Watercolour, unsigned, 21 x 27 cm)
Cat no 093

Notes: An unusual scene and quite possibly in a village far removed from
North Yorkshire. The whiteness of the village, the steps and the
drain-pipes are all distinctive.

Fyling Hall

View of Robin Hood's Bay from the garden of Fyling Hall
(Watercolour, 17 x 26 cm)
Cat no 147

After the Rain

"After the Rain"
(Oil, 25 x 35 cm)
Cat no 124

Note: As with "Brocket's Farm" opposite, the title of this painting is given on the back.

Hay-cart

Hay-cart
(Oil, 1903, 32 x 43 cm)
Cat no 111

Notes: This is one of very few early landscapes with a rural theme and a
very rare instance of equine interest. Despite its apparent familiarity,
it owes nothing to Constable, though it does bear a pronounced similarity
to a 1903 work of (Sir) Alfred Munnings.
